Hi there!

I wanted to take a moment and say THANK YOU to all the members that have been so kind, supportive and inspirational! Without your help, I know it would have been much harder for me to stay focused and enthusiastic about my new lifestyle.

After 8 weeks on NS, I've lost a total of 48 pounds, with another 117 to go. I've also started measuring my inches weekly, and compared to my measurements from a couple years ago, I have lost 10.5 inches from my waist, stomach, chest and neck. 4 of those were from my waist alone!

I'm already finding older clothes that now fit, and I still have a bunch of boxes to go through. I'm going to try and resist buying any new clothes until I get under the 300lb mark, if I even need to, since I've always been such a pack rat! I'm sure I've got a lot more clothes to find.

Thank you again for all the encouragement and kind words that many have left for me over the 2 months. I know I haven't been able to post as much lately as I have in the beginning, but I am still here and still focused.

It looks like the next version of the FAQ will have to possibly wait until Monday, but I've added a link to the latest post to my NS Member Profile, SonoTok, which I will update everytime I repost the FAQ. Hopefully that will make it easier for people to find it when they need to, that is if they can remember my member name. lol

I wish the Best to everyone! Happy eating and losing!

Craig

Congratulations on the 48 pounds Craig - that's amazing! I'm glad you're still around. I don't have the time to post (or read) the boards as often as I did at first (da*n job - lol). Your posts always have a sanity to them that I appreciate - especially when I'm feeling a bit insane about this whole process. Good luck on the rest of your journey - I'm glad you're here!

Week #6 Weigh in

Hello world!

I have weighed in after my 6th consecutive week on NS. I have lost another 5 pounds, for a total of 41 lost! I am still very excited about being on this new lifestyle, I honestly believe that I will make this my new habit and routine.

I haven't been exercising as much as I would like to. I've also been having one to two meals out during the weeks. I'm okay with that, because it is important for me to be able to function with my normal routine. I am happy to see that I am selecting more balanced, healthier meals at restaurants, and I am not "licking" my plate clean anymore, so to speak. I am taking much of it home or even letting the restaurant have it back. lol

Anyway, I enjoy the support and encouragement I receive from the NS boards. With everyone's support and concern, I know I can reach my goal.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

ATTITUDE is EVERYTHING

Hello All! I hope everyone is having a GREAT weekend!

I've always enjoyed this story. Its helps me to remember that no matter what happens in my life, no matter what challenges or stressing times come my way, that I have a choice in how I can react to it. I spent so much of my life living in a "re-actionary" way to events, rather than in a "proactive" way.

I find that it now helps me to keep a postive attitude about my new lifestyle of living on NS, and helps me to stay positive despite setbacks, issues with the food, and other obstacles to my continuing my journey to my goal.
I hope you enjoy it as well. Best wishes to all.

Craig

Jerry is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!" He was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, "I don't get it. You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"

Jerry replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, 'Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.' I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim, or I can choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life."

"Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested.

"Yes it is," Jerry said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or a bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live life."

I reflected on what Jerry said. Soon thereafter I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.

Several years later I heard that Jerry did something you are never supposed to do in a restaurant business: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpoint by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination. The robbers panicked and shot him. Luckly, Jerry was found relative quickly and rushed to the local trauma center. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body.

I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how was, he replied, "If I were any better, I'd be twins. Wanna see my scars?" I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place. "The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door," Jerry replied. "Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or I could choose to die. I chose to live."

"Weren't you scared? Didn't you lose consciousness?" I asked.

Jerry continued, "...The paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes I read 'he's a dead man.' I knew I needed to take action."

"What did you do?" I asked.

"Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me," said Jerry. "She asked me if I was allergic to anything. 'Yes' I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Bullets!' Over their laughter I told them 'I am choosing to live. Operated on me as if I am alive, not dead.'"

Jerry lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.

Attitude, after all, is everything.

a MAJOR revelation I had!

After four weeks on NS, I had a what I thought was MAJOR revelation. A big surprise that hadn't occured to me. Here is my posting on it and the replies received.

a MAJOR revelation I had! Reply
10 Replies Posted by: SonoTok on 01/05/05 at 06:04 PM
Hi there,

I had a MAJOR revelation the other day! It suddenly occured to me, that after 4 weeks of being on NS, absolutely no fast food has passed through my lips in a month! No McD's, no BK, no TacoSmell, no Jack in the Crack!

This may not seem like much, but being the typical Generation X'r, fast food has been one of my staples for my entire life! From my earliest memeories of eagerly waiting for my mom to bring the mcD's cheeseburgers to the table, always excited that I didn't have to wait that long like other restaurants! To just last November, having a Carl's Jr. spell.

I can honestly say that there is only one other possible time when I may have avoided fast food, and that was the few months I was on NS back in 1989. But I also remember not sticking to it 100%, thinking I was invincible, so it's very likely I may have cheated then, I just can't remember. The fact that I didn't apply what I learned shows that my heart wasn't in it.

I also took steps this time to reinforce the notion that fast food is bad for you. I rented Super Size Me!, which everyone should see! I also purchased the book Fast Food Nation and have been reading through that. Boy, talk about some interesting and scary facts from those two things.

Thankfully I haven't found myself craving any fast food garbage so far. Its like I have a different attitude about it now. I even find myself not wanting to run through the drive thru to get some for my girls, either. I think I need to nip their desires for it in the bud!

I do need to make a disclaimer, however. I've mentioned before that I work for the world headquarters of a mexican fast food chain. That's my little joke, trying to make them seem bigger than then are. They're actually about 40+ locations in California and Nevada only. However, I have tasted the food occasionally, in order to make sure the standards are kept at the stores I oversee. It doesn't bother me, however, because since I know exactly how everything is prepared, I know for a fact that the food we serve is made exactly the same way I would make it, with genuine ingredients I could purchase at the grocery store. Non of that engineered, chemical spiked, additive enhanced junk! Our food is "fancy restaurant" quality, but we've been labled "fast food" since we cook it so fast and therefore use drive thrus.

So with the exeption that, I haven't had any other fast food in a month. No wonder I've had so much more energy and stamina on NS!

I just thought I would share that, cause I think it is really cool! I can feel the new me already!

Craig

That is fantastic, Craig.

I read that book "Fast Food Nation" when it first came out, and it really really is interesting. After reading it, I stopped eating fast food for quite a while, but unfortunately, I must have forgotten what I had read, lol. But I'm here now, waiting on my food to start the program, so perhaps it's time for me to re-read that one. :)

I need to see "Supersize Me". My DOCTOR of all people told me to watch it when I was in his office last month with a cold. He just said, out of the blue "you need to see 'Supersize Me'". Of course I thought "and you need to work on your patient skills". LOL. :) Truly though, I am going to make sure I see it within the next couple of weeks.

Again, congratulations on your revelation. That is just fantastic.

CONGRATULATIONS, Craig! Your posts are so helpful, honest, and inspiring. I have a lot of weight to lose, so I feel very fortunate to have folks like you along the journey. Yah, fast food SUCKS so why do we crave it so? Has anybody out there actually felt GOOD after eating McD's fries or a Whopper? I can honestly say that I NEVER EVER felt physically good after eating that junk, yet I kept going back. Weird. But, like you, I am through with it.

What a terrific post! Good job! I have heard it takes 20 days to make or break a habit....so it looks like with 28 days under your (now smaller)belt, you've done it! Awesome!

Hey Craig - Not sure if you'll see this post, but I haven't been on since yesterday and I'm trying to "catch up". You are amazing. What a great victory for you!! You are doing awesome on this and I'm sure I speak for alot of us here on the boards when I say thank you for putting out that FAQ to the newbies!! I wish that was around when I started.

Week #4 weigh in

Here is my 4 week post, and the very kind replies that I got with it. I sure appreciate the nice words of encouragement I get. I go back and read them when I'm feeling discouraged, and they help. There is so much GREAT support on the boards. Thank you to everyone who replied to my post!

Greetings from blustery California!

I thought I would take a moment to post my progress after completing my first 4 weeks on NS. I have now lost 31 pounds! Considering that I was only hoping for 10-15 for the first month, needless to say I am both surprised and delighted.

I have waited until now to check my inch measurements, and I have lost 3 inches around my waist, 1.5 around my chest, and 1 inch around my stomach! I've noticed that I am going to have to punch a new hole in my dress belt soon so my pants won't fall down. lol

I know I still have along way to go, but I'm excited about getting such a good start! I'm sure the amount of weightloss will slow down as I get closer to goal, but I initially wasn't interested in losing it all overnight. I've heard the slower you lose weight the easier it is to keep it off, so I'm planning on a 12 to 18 month trek.

I'm also excited because I didn't find the NS program too difficult. It got much easier as time when by, and I think that the food is GREAT! The other added perks of having no more heartburn and having much more energy are really helping to reinforce my original determination to make this type of eating my permanent way of life.

I really appreciate all of the support, encouragement, and inspiration that I've recieve from other members, this is such a wonderful place to stay focused and on track. Thank you all for your kind words and advice.

Best wishes to everyone!

Craig

Hey Craig, my friend, congratulations!! That's awesome!! I love it that we (guys) lose like we do. I jsut don't know if I have the patience to lose as slow as the women do, but thankfully I don't have to! (sorry, ladies! hehe)

Keep it up, my friend!!

Hey buddy--I updated my profile a few minutes ago and I saw your name on the "recently updated list." I thought, "Oh yea...it's Craig's weigh-in day." I took a peek and there it was...another great weight loss for the week!!!!

I was getting ready to send you an email (I'll probably do that anyhow to say "hi") and I thought I'd take a peek at the posts to see if you posted your victory! There was the post and man, I am SO PSYCHED FOR YOU!!!! You are doing so well...I am so happy for you, I really am.

You are such a great guy and I know how committed you are to making positive changes in your life. You're gonna be one of the ones who succeeds all the way, I just know it! In a few months, you're going to be getting the posts from newbies who are encouraged by your tremendous progress and seeking advice on how you did it!

Great things happen to great people!

Keep up the super work, Craig! I know how badly you want to do this!
Love you,

GREAT JOB!!! I read your posts all the time. I started one week earlier and am down 16 lbs in that time. Isn't this program great! I too have not found it difficult. I am ahead of my goal of 2lbs a week and I am happy with any loss. You keep up the awesome job you are doing. I too figuer it is an 18 month journey into a new, healthier me.

Best wishes and keep on losing!

Alright Craig---WAY TO GO!!!!
I hope to lose 30 pounds during the first part of the year. I am so glad you did, in only 4 weeks!!

I'm in California too...Southern Calif--we are getting pounded today with a big rain storm. I LOVE rain. I know everyone is complaining about the rain, but geez, look at the poor victims who suffered the Tsunami in the Asia---what widespread deaths. I am NOT going to complain with a rainy day. Actually, it gets me motivated to clean the house so that is extra calories being burned.

Good luck on your weightloss. Keep up the good work!!!!!
You are bad-ass! =)

I too am in California....the northern part. I started my trek about month ago, and am down 1 size. I have quite a ways to go, am taking it s-l-o-w-l-y this time.
